The Beats by Dre‘s Beats by Black Creators program recently challenged HBCU students to create a film and soundtrack based on the Afrofuturism concept.
The result is “Maze,” a coming-of-age psychological thriller directed by Spellman student Miya Scaggs and written by Howard students Sabrina Anthony and Troy White. The film follows Zola, a Nigerian teenager struggling with trauma and a strained relationship with her mother. When she returns home from college, her brother gifts her a Quantum Cognition VR game to help her work through her psychological issues. The 12-track soundtrack is produced by Anthony and Tragic Johnson and features rising pop artist Say Rex. The project has already garnered attention from Revolt, Kollege Kidd, and others.
